What is e-Learning? |
e-Learning is flexible learning using ICT resources, tools and applications, and focusing on interaction among teachers, learners, and the online environment and on collaborative learning. e-learning usually refers to structured and managed learning experiences, and may involve the use of Internet, CD-ROM, software, other media and telecommunications. e-Education is more than
developing computer literacy and the skills necessary to operate
various types of information and communication technology. It is the
ability to: ■ apply ICT skills to access, analyse, evaluate, integrate, present and communicate information; ■ create knowledge and new information by adapting, applying, designing, inventing and authoring information; ■ enhance teaching and learning through communication and collaboration by using ICTs; and ■ function in a knowledge society by using appropriate technology and mastering communication and collaboration skills. The team consists of Lithemba and Luzuko, both in grade 3 at Cotswold Preparatory in Port Elizabeth; and four learners from Stirling Primary in East London: Tristan, Ashley and Kai in grade 5 and Holly in grade 6. Their backgrounds are different: two speak isiXhosa at home, two speak English, one speaks Mandarin to his parents and one speaks Afrikaans; three are South Africans, but one is American, one British and one Taiwanese; some come from wealthy two-car families, others come from townships and use public transport to come to school. ThinkQuest encourages and rewards such collaboration across social and cultural lines. Both team coaches, Claire Dean (Stirling Primary) and Brenda Hallowes (Cotswold Preparatory) are enthusiastic users of technology in teaching and learning. |
